Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge workshop 2018

On Tuesday 21st March, Roding Valley High School held the 2018 Jack Petchey “Speak Out!” Challenge work shop day. 30 year 10 students spent the day in the Library with workshop leader from The Speaker’s Trust, AC Gaskell and Challenge & Enrichment Coordinator Miss Hanlon, working on a range of speech writing activities and techniques.

After a day of preparation, the students all delivered their speeches in a competition period 5. The standard of speeches was incredibly high, with topics ranging from lisps to gentlemanly etiquette.

The 6 winners of the competition, who are going through to the next round are: Livvy Turnball, Florence New, Daniel Grogan, Ella Margetts, Oliver Wells and Lewis Scarfe. Two students who won the ‘highly commended award’ were Leighton Brooks and Katie Feeney.

The winners from the first competition round will be competing in a school assembly round to go through to the West Essex regional finals on 10th May at Epping St John’s school.

The students all benefited greatly from the day and made some of the following comments:

  • I thought today was a fantastic experience and has definitely boosted my confidence in speaking. – Matthew
  • This was a great training and should be done internationally – Raajveer
  • Brilliant workshop. I learnt a lot. Thank you for funding an opportunity to learn a life skill. – Daniel
  • Photographs from the day were captured by Roding Valley High School’s George Gorak, Year 12.
